The Morrigan
The
Morrigan was known as the shape-shifting Celtic Goddess of fate, war, and
death. She was also the patron goddess of magic, revenge, prophecy,
and a favored goddess of witches.
The ancient Celts believed she hovered over
battlefields in the form of a raven, and foretold or influenced the outcome
of battles. After a battle, the Celtic warriors would abandon the
field until dawn, as they believed the Morrigan would come in the dark of night
to claim her trophies, the heads of those slain in battle. These "trophy
heads" came to be known as "The Morrigan's Acorn Crop."
